PhysX enabled Nvidia GPUs

Posted in Tech with tags , , , , on August 14, 2008 by michael b

Nvidia has recently released its update as promised to enable its higher range GPUs to support PhysX. I’m quite eager to test it out but I still haven’t built my PC which is sitting in boxes at the moment.

I always remember first hearing about PhysX and wondered if it would ever catch on seeing as you needed to purchase an additional card to use it. Now that it is incorporated within current generation Nvidia GPUs with a simple software update it will be interesting to see how widespread it becomes as currently only a handful of games support it.

Wii DVD playback

So it’s finally been done, the Wii has been given DVD playback. This doesn’t come from Nintendo though this gift comes from the homebrew scene who are always hard at work. Here is a guide you can check out and try for yourself.

I must admit I haven’t attempted it myself as I have numerous DVD playback devices but for those few in the world who own a Wii and no other DVD capable devices I’m sure this would be just what your looking for. Enjoy.

New GT 5 Prologue update

So the new patch came out for GT 5 last Friday and I thought I would give it a a download. I had obviously forgotten about my previous attempts at downloading a patch for the game as the update had been cancelled due to an error before it even got started properly.

Yes a whole bunch of people would be downloading the patch on the first day it came out but their servers don’t seem to disconnect users gracefully at all. I simply receive a message telling me an error occurred. Ok so there was an error while trying to download it but what was the error? I’m not satisfied just being told that there was an error because it leaves me wondering if the cause is on my end or the server’s.

I decided to leave it a few days until the servers had cooled down a bit but lo and behold the same thing was happening 4 days on. I mean it’s bad enough the download speeds move at snails pace but then to get half way through and have your download cancelled is extremely annoying. One of the listed fixes in this update were better download speeds so that will be put to the test for the next patch but some kind of resume feature or at least an indicator that your download is being resumed would be nice.

I got to the point where I didn’t even care about downloading the patch anymore simply because it meant I had to constantly monitor the download in case it decided to fail. I can accept the slow download speeds but to have the download fail and have to start again, which has to be done manually I might add, is ridiculous and a waste of time.

So next update Polyphony Digital, add a feature which has automatic download resuming, please.
