Choosing a new PC case

Posted in Tech with tags , , , on July 30, 2008 by michael b

It will soon be time for me to build a PC again after moving back home as I had to sell my old one before I left the UK. It’s a shame as I had grown quite fond of my PC case and monitor but change isn’t always bad. I previously owned a Thermaltake Kandalf which was a beast of a case and provided excellent cooling out of the box.

As much as I liked this case however, I think it’s time to move on to bigger and better things so I have had  my eye on the Thermaltake Mozart which is a little bigger and will provide the space I need for liquid cooling.

I think I used to get away with running my high performance components in the UK because of the cooler climate but now that I’m closer to the equator I don’t think I’m as fortunate. My only problem is scouting around to find one of these behemoths in the island but I’m sure I will be able to turn up something.

DirectX 11 announced

Posted in Game Development, Tech with tags , , on July 28, 2008 by michael b

So Microsoft has revealed that DirectX 11 is on the way with the new version of Windows which is all fine and dandy but my question is where are all the DirectX 10 games?

Vista has been on the market for a while and there are just a handful of games that are available with DX10 support. So all those people who upgraded their systems (like me) have been left wanting and waiting for the games to come out.

While the new version of Windows won’t launch for quite some time yet I don’t know if developers have had enough time to harness DX10 properly yet. Even a game like Age of Conan who claimed it had DX10 support dropped its features just before launch. What does that say about the current state of DX10?

One bit of good news is that current DX10 cards will support DX11 plus the rumours of the new ‘compute shader‘ which will allow developers to harness the power of GPUs. This sounds great but I remember hearing about all the features of DX10 before it was released and what it meant for gaming. I will be keeping my eye on things to come.

Returning home

It’s been about a week or so since I last posted but so much has happened in that short space of time. I recently sold most of my belongings as I had decided I wanted to return home to Barbados to live.

It’s been a long week with packing and moving and all the stress that goes along with that but I can say I’m over the worst of it. I’ve arrived in one piece and think I have everything I planned to bring with me but I still have some unpacking to do so time will tell.

Sony Ericsson P1i first impressions

Posted in Mobile Devices, Tech with tags , , , on July 19, 2008 by michael b

So the postman finally brought my phone yesterday and I have been putting it through it’s paces since then. I have to say so far I am pleased with my purchase although there is still plenty for me to play around with I feel confident this was good choice.

I have had 2 Sony Ericsson phones prior to this model and have been very satisfied with them. While they were both media orientated phones, this is my first jump to an enterprise model of the same brand. The first thing I noticed was how light it was considering its size (just a little longer than the N95 but slimmer) and that’s with the battery in! The build quality feels solid despite its weight though with the silver trim giving a stately look.

The box included the phone, extra stylus, velvet slip case, hands-free kit, plug charger, usb cable, docking cradle and software cd with documentation. I was quite impressed with the inclusion of the docking cradle and just made me appreciate the phone even more as it looks great sitting there. The cradle allows for the charger and usb cable to be connected simultaneously so you charge and connect to a PC at the same time, well thought out. I ordered some lcd screen protectors and a 4GB M2 stick separately so the phone is all kitted out for just under £20 which I think is an excellent bargain.

I have never used the UIQ interface and I must say it has taken me a little while to get used to. I found myself getting lost navigating for the first half an hour but gradually finding everything is a lot more natural. One problem that I noticed was that I was using the stylus, jog dial and keyboard to get around which felt awkward. I wish a more efficient method of navigating was implemented as sometimes I feel as if I need a 3rd hand.

The full qwerty keypad took some getting used to as it features 2 letters on a single key but I fear persons with larger fingers would find this a nightmare to use. The keys are slightly raised at each end to allow for better precision and this really helps although I still miss the correct key sometimes. I have had lots of practice using the AgileMessenger application which I downloaded separately.

A concern I have though is the battery life. It seems to take a very long time to charge this phone and the battery seems to run out way too quickly under heavy use. I used the radio and music player while browsing the web and chatting and I got about 3 hours use before I needed to recharge the battery again. I need to perform some more testing to see what really drains most of the power but I suspect the music player and radio are the culprits.

I have made/received several calls already and have not had any drop any so far unlike my previous Sony Ericsson phone which seemed to drop 1 out of every 3 calls. I’m very pleased with this although I know it’s down to my service provider than the phone itself but that fact that it seems to stay connected is great. Calls are crystal clear with or without the hands-free kit which is expected so everything is ok in that department.

As I mentioned there are still plenty of other features for me to test but so far I’m pleased with this phone and looking forward to spending some more time with it to explore all of its features.

Sony’s Home

Posted in Gaming with tags , , , on July 17, 2008 by michael b

So I find out that Home is going to be region locked when it’s eventually released. Now I have been very skeptical of Sony’s service which has been in development for such a long time now. I always said since I first heard about it that it would either work or it wouldn’t, no in between.

Now with this announcement that people from the US can’t interact with people say from the UK for example, it goes against what I think the aim of the service is attempting to provide. Isn’t the whole point to have everyone connected?

Just when I thought Sony couldn’t do anything else to spoil Home they proved me wrong which is leaving me even less inclined to care about it. Region locking should be option but not compulsory.

Good going Sony shoot it in the foot before it even gets released but only time will tell if it will be a success.
